And this is written during lunchtime

I wanted to take this time to say congratulations to all of our players. The win percentage combined jumped up once again.

But you're probably wondering what was the best and worst categories of the week? Before I mention them (or you can be a pahtee poopah and scroll to the bottom), I wanted to make a request here.

If you've been with us for a while now, you know that I'm not a 100 percent fan of statistics. Part of my reason is that you can make statistics sing any song you want.

At least the statistics I've been working on are pretty well. I think it tells us a lot about what you all do, when you play, how well you're playing, and what categories are the best for our players.

There's a big difference between "favorite category" and "best category," and I have to tell myself this a lot. I like sports, but my best category is food because I get more questions right and/or I have a better dallion average.

In the coming weeks, I'll be able to break things down even further. Right now, I'm just scratching the surface of these numbers. With that in mind, here you go ...

Week 22's best and worst
1. Food and Drink: 84.21 percent (260.30 avg. dallions won)
2. Science: 74.04 percent (250.78 avg. dallions won)
7. Sports: 55.67 percent (172.5 avg. dallions lost)
8. Geography: 52.59 percent (180.87 avg. dallions lost)

Keep in mind that most of the time it takes more than one question to tip the scales. One question does not separate a category unless everyone on a question totally bombs or has insane success.

Before I go, I wanted to say that, only two of the eight categories had drop offs: Entertainment (58.08 percent) and Technology (64.79 percent). They weren't that big -- less than 3 percent -- but it's something to note.

Learning more with The PostQ

Posted by GC2 on 4/08/2009 02:37:00 PM
You all have probably noticed it on our Twitter feed, but we're starting a new feature called "PostQ."

After every question, we'll give you an additional piece of information about the question you just played. You can check it out on our Twitter page and here on the blog, which has the Twitter feed.

We'll probably be making a few tweaks in the coming days to make it a little bit easier to access.

The PostQ comes at the top of each hour; there might be times when it comes slightly earlier, but guaranteed it'll come at the top of each hour. Be sure to stick around to get some more information about the question you previously played.

Or, perhaps you wake up in the morning (provided you didn't pull an all-nighter) and are wondering what type of questions we threw at everyone overnight? Now you can check them out.

Like it? Dislike it? Have suggestions? Leave us comments here or at the feedback forum.

And the (constant) winner is ...

Posted by GC2 on 4/07/2009 01:00:00 PM
Thanks to all that participated in the quick guess earlier in the morning. And before I mention what it is, let me say that this is something I've wanted to do personally for a while.

By knowing what categories players are best in, we at Ringorang can mold the competition. Before you start cheering, think about it.

If the whole field is good at Entertainment and History and we plan a high-stakes competition, would it be best to go mostly Entertainment and History? We might go to the people's worst categories and say, "If you want to win, then suffer." But then again, we could just up the difficulty in Entertainment and History and say, "So you think you're good in these categories? Let's find out if you're REALLY good."

I don't think it's a stone cold lock that we'll go one way with the categories now that we have an idea of how you're all performing on some weeks.

Right now, we've analyzed the past two weeks (21 and 20). Whether these are a trend, we don't know yet. But I think so, considering that this is a span of 210 questions.

And here you go, the two best and two worst categories ...

Week 21
1. Food and Drink - 79.68 percent
2. Science - 75.44 percent
7. Society and politics - 56.21 percent
8. Sports - 43.31 percent

Week 20
1. Food and Drink - 88.55 percent
2. Science - 66.46 percent
7. Technology - 54.12 percent
8. Sports - 43.31 percent

After seeing these results, I'm thinking of issuing a challenge to all of our competitors for Week 22. Stay tuned.

Place your dallion wager now

Mike and I had a meeting yesterday to talk about the player performances, and it was very insightful. In case you want me to speak further about it ... I found this sheet of paper that has all of these numbers, wait, nevermind.

The one thing we both wonder is what category our players excel. I'm going to go find out today, but let's hear from you.

We'll be back later this afternoon hopefully with some results to share. In the meantime, leave a comment thinking which two of these categories are the best among the Ringorang public:

History
Society, politics and recent events
Geography
Food and Drink
Sports
Arts and Entertainment
Technology
Science

Keep in mind that this isn't a "favorite category," but rather a "best performance."

The madness is coming

Posted by GC2 on 4/02/2009 10:40:00 AM
I know that a lot of you like weekend tournaments, so we'll be giving you another one coming up this weekend!

It's the March April Madness tournament.

The questions are everything related to the NCAA Division I basketball tournament. There could be questions about this year's tournament, past tournaments, where players are now, and other nuggets.

The March April Madness competition starts Saturday at 8 a.m. PT and will continue until Sunday at 7:59 p.m. PT.

The winner will receive a Ringorang T-shirt!

I think this is going to be a fun competition. There's so much history regarding the tournament, it's amazing.

Some of the things that come to my mind include Villanova beating Georgetown in 1985, the Fab Five, the Duke-Kentucky finish in 1992, Texas Western vs. Adolf Rupp's Kentucky team, and UCLA-Gonzaga highlighted by the excellent broadcasting of Gus Johnson, which you can see below.
